Roca consolidates its commitment to the promotion of talent in Design with the 2nd edition of the Roca One Day Design Challenge in Hong Kong

The competition is an express design challenge where young designers and architects propose, in one single day, to design an innovative product as a response to a briefing revealed at the beginning of the event

The express design competition One Day Design Challenge celebrated its second edition in Hong Kong at the Roca Concepts space on the 23rd November, with the collaboration of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association. Roca One Day Design Challenge continues growing with 5 successful editions of the competition in Spain, the first edition in the United Arab Emirates and the second edition in Hong Kong, which takes place again after its first edition last year. Along these lines, Emilio Salazar, Managing Director of Roca China, commented that “this second edition consolidates the commitment of Roca to China and the interest of the company in promoting young talent”.

Nearly 100 students and young professionals of the architecture and design fields faced the challenge of designing a 3 x 3 x 3 bathroom space, a 3m² functional area with toilet, basin and shower for a three-person household in less than 8 hours.

The winners of the first prize were Chung Shu Wing and Shing Lok Tin with 'Water Drop', a bathroom space where the ceiling may be transformed into a bath, thanks to a flexible membrane that creates a new area for the user when it fills with water. The second prize was awarded to the project 'Toiletᶟ’by Cheung Ka Wai, Louis Hung and Raori Ravin, which created three different spaces by means of a panel that moves on rails, thus allowing the use of the bathroom by three different people at the same time. Finally, the project 'Smart-Room' by Florence Ma, Yip Tsun Yin and Chan Yi Sa obtained the third prize for the ease in the customisation of the space depending on the needs of the different users: shower, bath or wardrobe. The winners were awarded 12,000, 8,000 and 4,000 HK$ respectively.

The jury was made up of renowned design and architecture professionals, including Chris Jones, who has been developing advertising and marketing campaigns for some of the world’s leading brands; Gary Chang, one of the most influential figures within the architectural sector, interior and product design world today; Fabien Nauroy, Head of Design at NATIVE UNION; Antony Chan, Founder and Creative Director of Cream and Chairman of Hong Kong Interior Design Association; and Emilio Salazar, Managing Director of Roca China. They all valued the great capacity of the participants to solve the brief that was laid out to them in such an ingenious way and in such a short time. Likewise, Antony Chan recalled that “this contest is a Golden chance for design lovers and young designers to expose their talent to the design world”.

Roca, leading brand in the manufacturing, commercialisation and design of products for the bathroom space, continues providing an opportunity to young professionals and students with an increasingly international competition.
